I finally got my dirty hands on a Radeon HD5970 and it’s here to stay – GSMArena Blog

Remember the post I wrote about the announcement of the world’s most powerful video card? Yes, I am talking for the ATI Radeon 5970, which is made of two HD5870 cores. Well, Santa dropped in for a beer sometime around Christmas and left it over.

main I finally got my dirty hands on a Radeon HD5970 and its here to stay

You can bet he also brought some more PC goodies to match it. But here are some more live shots of the thing.

As you’ll see this monster is as long as my 13” MacBook Pro, while my iPhone 3GS just gets lost when put next to the card.

The even bigger retail box is full of goodies. The HD5970 (made by Sapphire in my case) comes with a free game – Dirt 2 – but you will need to register for a Steam account to download it. Crossfire connector, DisplayPort to mini DisplayPort convertor, two power connector adapters (6 and 8 pins), DVI-HDMI and DVI-to-VGA adapters plus a driver CD are also found in its really huge retail box.

Of course Santa, thought about the beast’s den and the rest of the PC case furniture he left include an Intel i7 920 processor, ASUS Rampage II Gene motherboard, 3×2GB DDR3 1866 OCZ RAM, 1TB WD Black Caviar hard disk and 750W power supply.

I haven’t had enough time to do any tests so far as I barely managed to assembled it but it all adds up for one seriously fast lean, mean machine. The torture tests and power-hungry games are scheduled for the next few weeks and if something interesting pops out, you can be sure I’ll keep you posted.

The Lenovo Multimedia Remote with Keyboard is making me lose my sleep – GSMArena Blog

The Lenovo Multimedia Remote with Keyboard is making me lose my sleep – GSMArena Blog

OK, I admit, I’m not sure if I’ll be able to find a proper application for this wireless keyboard/trackball combo but I just love it and I want it. Its killer looks and fair price turn it into a must-have no matter if you’re a high tech junkie or just like to be surrounded by nice looking things.

gsmarena 001 The Lenovo Multimedia Remote with Keyboard is making me lose my sleep

What’s stopping me of buying it (and the cause for my sleep disorders) is that it’s not something I’d use every day and so my practical side is putting a really good fight with my “I-want-it-now” side. But allow me to indulge myself with a quick walkthrough of the features of that mouse/keyboard crossbreed.

The 60-US-dollar Lenovo multimedia remote with keyboard reminds me of the popular Logitech diNovo Mini but Lenovo’s keyboard seems a lot more comfortable and costs at least twice less (if you have some luck you can also find and eCoupon and get Lenovo’s gadget for even less – for around good 30 US dollars).

The new wireless keyboard/mouse combo of Lenovo isn’t the best solution for heavy twitters or web surfers but is a great complement to a multimedia PC. With its help you can not only remote control your HTPC but also happily browse online.

gsmarena 002 The Lenovo Multimedia Remote with Keyboard is making me lose my sleep

What you actually get is palm-sized keyboard with multimedia controls and a small trackball. Even if it may look too small for comfortable typing, its unusual form should provide the comfort you need. If you look really hard, you can also spot that it will be equally useful in a more traditional handhold position as the shape of that thing around the trackball is quite close to that of a mouse.

The 2.4GHz wireless Lenovo multimedia remote with keyboard connects to the computer through a tiny dongle while the power it needs to operate comes from a pair of AAA batteries.

gsmarena 003 The Lenovo Multimedia Remote with Keyboard is making me lose my sleep

If only that cute little thing had a proper name. Lenovo describe it as a multimedia remote with keyboard but its real model number seems to be 57Y6336. No chance to memorize that, huh? Luckily, you can always copy and paste it if you happen to head for Lenovo’s online shop.

Google Chrome OS based nebook in time for next Christmas? ARM, Tegra, SSD and other techy words inside

Google Chrome OS based nebook in time for next Christmas? ARM, Tegra, SSD and other techy words inside

Google would-be hardware products are all over the place right now – after the Nexus One, the true Google phone, here comes word of the true Google netbook based on the new Chrome OS.

Google will realease a Chrome OS based netbook

The guys from Mountain View are taking the popularizing of both their mobile and desktop OSes into their own hands… by selling devices themselves.

Technically, the Chrome OS netbook is a smartbook because it is powered by an ARM processor. It’s no ordinary ARM platform either, it’s NVDIA Tegra, so hello HD video playback. Depending on the Tegra variant that translates to either 720p or 1080p with possibly even HDMI support.

The current rumors don’t go into such specifics, they just mention the “HD Ready” multi-touch display with a 10.1″ diagonal.

On the inside, there’s a 64GB SSD, which potentially means more speed than regular HDDs and definitely better power efficiency. The Chrome OS netbook (or whatever its real name is) packs 2GB of RAM too, so memory performance shouldn’t be an issue.

The CPU is the wild card though – nothing is known besides that it is ARM-based. There’s no info on clock speed, plus there are no proper comparisons, showing which is faster clock for clock – an ARM CPU or an x86 CPU. We’ll have to wait and see. But ARM CPU + SSD equals truckloads of work time on battery (in theory at least).

On the communication front, the smart/net/whateverbook is very well equipped – Wi-Fi, 3G, Ethernet port, several USB ports and Bluetooth. You also get a webcam and of course, a 3.5mm audio jack and a card reader.

The Chrome netbook will come with plenty of productivity apps preinstalled – Gmail, Google Docs, Google Calendar and also Google Maps and Google Search by Voice. I’m not quite sure “preinstalled” is the right word though, “pre-bookmarked” is more proper maybe?

At any rate, it’s clear that Google are trying to displace Windows-based netbooks from their current king-of-the-hill status. The Chrome OS should offer the same software capabilities (and so does Linux but consumers are stubborn) and the killer hardware specs are a great motivation for people to take the plunge and switch away from the Microsoft OSes.

According to the rumors, Google will sell these Chrome OS netbooks directly to consumers or subsidized by a carrier as a part of a 3G plan.

Anyhow, the device should retail for 300 US dollars or less, starting in the 2010 holiday season (yes, that’s an year from now). Personally, I can’t wait to see it benchmarked – SSD + multi-touch display for a sub-$300 price sounds enticing. And who knows, maybe ARM is the future of netbooks (the OLPC project will be switching to those too).

Opera 10.5 pre-alpha uses Carakn JavaScript engine, almost catches up to Chrome

Opera 10.5 pre-alpha uses Carakn JavaScript engine, almost catches up to Chrome

There’s been some bickering between Google Chrome and Apple Safari, both claiming to be the “world’s fastest web browser”. Firefox got an updated JavaScript engine in v3.5 and is running for first place too.

big Opera 10.5 pre alpha uses new Carakan JavaScript engine, almost catches up to Chrome

With all this commotion, the developers at Opera were working in a secret facility… or, um, at their workplace or whatever, and they are almost ready to give Chrome’s V8 JavaScript engine a run for its money.

Their new toy is called the Carakan JavaScript engine (Carakan is a Javanese script, get it?) and will be put to use in Opera 10.5. Opera 10.5 is still in pre-alpha stage, but you can take it for a spin if you like – it’s available for both Windows and Mac OS X.

Lee Mathews over at Download Squad tested the new Opera 10.5 against Chrome 4 and Firefox 3.7 pre-alpha. The testing grounds was the V8 benchmark. You can try it yourself here.

gsmarena 001 Opera 10.5 pre alpha uses new Carakan JavaScript engine, almost catches up to Chrome

The V8 benchmark is probably biased towards Chrome, but Opera 10.5 gives comparable performance even at this early stage. Firefox seems to be lagging behind by a huge margin.

Opera is not done with Carakan – they plan to optimize it for ARM processors, which should make Opera Mobile even faster. Since, there’s an ARM-based CPU in pretty much every smartphone, that’s great news.

There’s also talk of reducing memory usage and cranking out even more speed out of the Carakan JavaScript engine.

Other additions to Opera 10.5 are a new graphics library for that can be hardware accelerated, like Mozilla and Microsoft want to do, an improved layout engine for better HTML5 support, better platform integration and so on.

Quick tips for watching the amazing Avatar in IMAX/digital 3D without getting a headache

Quick tips for watching the amazing Avatar in IMAX/digital 3D without getting a headache

Some people have real troubles watching a 3D movie. With the premiere of the James Cameron’s Avatar, which is meant to be seen in 3D or IMAX will make many of those suffer instead of enjoying the movie.

It turns out that the solution of getting out of the cinema without a headache is simple. And it doesn’t involve leaving 2 hours before the movie ends.

main A tip for watching the amazing Avatar movie in IMAX/Digital 3D without getting a headache

Shadow Locked explains quite thoroughly the reasons for your headache. It’s not in your eyes, nor even your glasses or the picture. It’s the director’s cinematographic technique of limiting the depth of field. It focuses on one thing in the screen and most of the background is blurred. Still a lot of people pay equal attention on both the focused object and the blurred background.

So to enjoy the movie best – make it a point to watch only the stuff that’s IN focus. Limiting depth of field is surely a nice technique but with 3D cinema it’s quite the resulting effect is quite exaggerated by the 3D illusion. Trying to keep your attention on all things throughout the frame’s depth will surely get you a hangover feeling.

Now that you know how to watch Avatar, you barely have any excuses not to see it. We sure did – all of us went to see it together this weekend and we were all thrilled. It’s one of the most beautiful motion pictures ever made, with some excellent score, visual effects and a nice story with lots of messages (though a bit banal at times).

James Cameron made the best out of his mojo again and pulled off a film, which will be remembered for quite some time. Its 8.9 IMDB score speaks for itself. I’m not sure if it will break any records, or collect as many Oscars as Titanic, but I know I will go see it at least once again. IMAX, 3D or standard 2D – it doesn’t matter – Avatar is definitely a must-see.

Twitter got hacked by the “Iranian Cyber Army”, claimed nothing stolen

A day ago the social network Twitter was hacked by a group called “Iranian Cyber Army”. There is no harm done to the servers and databases, the attack just compromised the DNS records and redirected to a new web site, instead of Twitter.

main Twitter got hacked by the Iranian Cyber Army, presumably nothing stolen

Twitter claim nothing is stolen and I believe they’re straight with us. But if the hackers really meant some harm, they might have managed to design a false Twitter page before unveiling the attack. This would have allowed them to easily steal a lot of accounts with passwords.

So just to be sure, you may want to change your password.

Is iSlate the name for the rumored Apple tablet and will it be revealed soon? – GSMArena Blog

iSlate may be the proper name for the long rumored Apple tablet. MacRumors posted an evidence for the Apple’s ownership of many international iSlate domains including iSlate.com and iSlate.co.uk.

main Is iSlate the name for the rumored Apple tablet and will it be revealed soon?

It’s been a long time since the first rumors about an Apple tablet start circling into the internet. This time the iSlate evidence looks so real that it may as well be announced in a few weeks.

MacRumors found some historical evidences for the domain iSlate.com, which at the end became property of Apple. Sometime in 2007 Apple bought this domain, but remained hidden owner until a few weeks earlier this year, when the real name was exposed.

main2 Is iSlate the name for the rumored Apple tablet and will it be revealed soon?

TechCrunch have gone even further and their research came up with very intriguing results. The iSlate.com is not the only registered domain. There are plenty more for many countries around the globe including iSlate.co.uk, iSlate.jp, iSlate.fr and iSlate.cn.

It seems Apple have started the preparations for their next huge product line – the iSlate tablet(s).

Some recent information points that Apple asked the iPhone developers not to limit their software for the iPhone’s 320×480 resolution. Apple is also asking select developers to get some new apps ready for a January demonstration (of a 7-inch tablet?). The Silicon Alley Insiderclaim the new Apple product will be released later in 2010, (probably March).

If you want to read more speculations about Apple’s tablet, Gizmodo have done a nice job of piecing all the bits in a full dedicated article.

Crazy named Acer Aspire 8942G-728G1280TWN is what the gamers really want

Acer are obviously prepping a new gaming laptop. The new monster will come with an 1.6 GHz Intel i7 quad-core processor, 8GB DDR3 RAM and AMD HD5850 video with 1GB GDDR5 – all that promises full DirectX 11 support.

main Is Acer Aspire 8942G 728G1280TWN what gamers dream of?

The amazing specs list continues with an 18.4-inch LED 1080p Full HD display, two 640GB SATA HDDs and a BluRay drive.

There is no info about the pricing just yet, but Aspire 8942G-728G1280TWN (thank goodness for copy/paste) will be surely priced at least twice as cheap as a similar spec’d Alienware mobile rig. Still that insane hardware, along with an 8-cell Li-Ion battery will weight about 4.6 kg, so as it seems mobility and gaming are hardly a good match.

The Acer Aspire 8942G-728G1280TWN should be released in the beginning of the 2010.

Buy a Google phone or else… Google will totally blackmail you into buying it

Buy a Google phone or else… Google will totally blackmail you into buying it

I’ll probably remember 2009 as the year of my total surrender to Web 2.0. I’ve practically moved all my personal stuff up there in the Google cloud of web applications. I’ve got my calendars, my contacts, some of my documents, family photos, family videos, and my primary email account all sitting nicely in Google’s control. They all sync and play nicely with my smartphone, I have access to them wherever I go and best of all, it’s all free.

I’m already way beyond the “just trying how things will work out” phase and I have committed fully to this relationship.

And then you stumble into one of those funny videos. And it just makes you think – what if…
