Microsoft Outlook 2010 gets social networking, how about a boss key? – GSMArena Blog

Microsoft Outlook 2010 gets social networking, how about a boss key?

Microsoft Outlook is a popular email client a lot of people use at work. How to make it better? Add social networking, of course! But wait, won’t your boss be pissed with you tweeting instead of, you know… doin’ da job?

big Microsoft Outlook 2010 gets social networking, how about a boss key?
In a strange, “me too” kind of move, Microsoft decided they’ll add social networking to Microsoft Outlook very soon after Google launched Buzz – the social networking tool built into Gmail. Not to be outdone, Microsoft are hard at work to put Facebook, MySpace, Twitter and LinkedIn integration into their once business-minded email client.

Okay, it may not be that bad – they just announced the public beta of LinkedIn for Outlook and it’s a “business-oriented social networking site” (says Wikipedia). LinkedIn tries to connect you to people and businesses but only through existing connections, that is through existing contacts you trust. Support for the other social networks is coming soon.

Come to think of it, just about every company nowadays has a Twitter or a Facebook account (we do – here’s the GSMArena Facebook page and you can follow us on Twitter here), so there might be a use for that too.

But not everyone would want to use it – the Internet can tell quite a few stories of people who did stuff on Facebook and got canned after.

NASA bring the sun to your iPhone, see how

ou know, apps for the iPhone no longer vary from useful to nuisance. Not when NASA gets involved. A new iPhone application gives you a live view of the sun as well as alerts, images and even videos of interesting events (how about the death of a comet?).

main Sun spotting on your iPhone, solar physics for beginners

To be honest, I’m not keen on astronomy. But you don’t have to be to appreciate this application. It isn’t just a bunch of images brought together into a 3D model of the sun but real action coming to your iPhone from the Solar-Terrestrial Relations Observatory (a.k.a. STEREO).

STEREO-A and STEREO-B are two spacecraft monitoring the solar surface from two sides. Their positioning makes sure they won’t miss a thing happening on the sun.

At first you might be surprised that the sun displayed on your iPhone is green. There’s nothing wrong with your phone. Or with the app. The telescopes aboard the STEREO-A and STEREO-B observe the sun in the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) portion of the electromagnetic spectrum.

So, the sun looks green (though as of version 2.0 the app has some extra EUV wavelengths added so by changing the wavelength you can also change the sun color into blue, yellow or orange).

You can spin the 3-dimensional sphere, zoom in or out. There are also live alerts. If the sun activity is about to grow or there is something interesting going on you’ll be among the first to know. The 3D sun app will then show video clips of what happened. Just don’t imagine some great explosions or something. It’s science, not Hollywood!

If you want a glimpse of the sun even if the whole sky is full of clouds, just go to the App Store and get the 3D sun application. It’s free.

Rumored Nokia N8-00 to be introduced at the MWC 2010, packs a 12MP camera capable of 720p video recording

Rumored Nokia N8-00 to be introduced at the MWC 2010, packs a 12MP camera capable of 720p video recording

In less than 4 days the mystery surrounding the rumored Nokia N8 done with. Even if there is no Nokia device called N8 waiting to be announced soon, I hope that there will be a Nokia phone packing all those features I’m about to share with you after the jump. The name hardly matters. But the features do!

main Rumored Nokia N8 to be introduced at the MWC 2010, packing a 12MP camera with 720p video recording

Unfortunately, I don’t have a picture to show you. Only a short… a really short specs list. So, reportedly, the Nokia N8 (technically called N8-00, the zeros designate the market version) will be the company’s first 12MP cameraphone (finally!). The thing will also be capable of taking 720p videos at 30 fps and will come with an HDMI port.

The N8-00 is expected to be the first smartphone running Symbian^3. It should have a 3.5″ capacitive touchscreen with multi-touch capabilities. Nokia N8 may also feature support for DivX files. By the way, according to the same source this info comes from, Ovi Store will start offering Video on Demand.

It’s about time Nokia introduced a device like that, isn’t it?

Google Buzz turns Gmail into a social networking site, Facebook and MySpace beware – GSMArena Blog

Google Buzz turns Gmail into a social networking site, Facebook and MySpace beware

An XKCD comic shows the following morning routine – 1) wake up, 2) catch up on the lives of friends around the world, 3) get out from under the covers. It sounds weird when you put it like that but it’s nonetheless true and it’s social networking that made it possible.

big Google Buzz turns Gmail into a social networking site, Facebook and MySpace beware

Now Google is launching Google Buzz – a social networking tool that integrates into Gmail and taps into a lot of other sites you might be using, like Twitter, Picasa, Flickr and Google Reader.

Facebook is apparently working on an email service, which will likely jump to a spot in the top three email services the moment it starts – Facebook has 400 million users or thereabouts. Google Buzz is doing the opposite – turning the (current) number one in email into a social networking site.

With Google Buzz, the search giant is playing to their strengths. When someone comments on an update you’ve posted, the comment goes straight into a dynamic entry in the Gmail Inbox.

Positioning is an important part of Google Buzz – but it’s not just your current coordinates, it’s the place you’re in. This uses Google Places – you can post a comment about the place, check out information about it and other places near it, look through comments of others about the same place and so on.

Google Buzz makes sharing photos and videos a child’s play – there’s a quick and easy to use photo browser and video player and posting images and videos is as simple as it gets. It imports content from Flickr and Picasa and it will even pull the images from a link you posted, so you just click on them and they are embedded into the post.

Buzz also shows the Twitter streams of your contacts and will recommend posts by your friends’ friends. By selecting which ones you like, Google Buzz will get even better at recommending comments that are interesting to you. For now however, it can only display Twitter feeds. Buzz also integrates the news feeds from Google Reader to push you to the brink of information overload.

Google Buzz will be heavily used as a mobile app – Apple iPhone and the Android are the first to get it, because they have HTML5 support for location-based services. Gizmodo has posted a hands-on for the mobile version, check it out.

Well, well – being a big company has its advantages, doesn’t it? Facebook email will get a huge user base even if only a quarter of their users sign up for the service, and because Google Buzz is integrated into Gmail and automatically imports you email contacts, it will get you through the hardest part of creating a new social networking account in an instant.

So you think your iPhone has a killer screen? Check THIS out! – GSMArena Blog

So you think your iPhone has a killer screen? Check THIS out!

We have a little something that we’re working on right now and we just couldn’t keep it all to ourselves. It’s a phone with a screen so gorgeous that it easily puts to shame the current best. Blacks are immensely deep, the colors are vivid and the viewing angles are mind-boggling. Here’s it compared to the iPhone 3G (both screens set at maximum brightness):

gsmarena 001 So you think your iPhone has a killer screen? Check THIS out!

We can’t tell you what phone it is just yet but it surely has one hell of a display. We haven’t seen anything like that.

For the more inquisitive among you, we’ve got to point out that this shot hasn’t undergone any digital manipulation. The display performance of the newcomer is equally impressive under direct sunlight.

Unfortunately, we’ll have to keep silent on the identity of the phone for now as it should be announced at the MWC 2010 – the events starts on the 15 February and you can bet we’ll be there on location covering the latest and greatest.

Samsung to show off a new phone with new, better AMOLED touchscreen at the MWC? – GSMArena Blog

Samsung to show off a new phone with new, better AMOLED touchscreen at the MWC?

Samsung is cooking up a few surprises for us at the MWC and apparently their brand-new Super AMOLED displays will be one of them. The current touchscreens are made up of a separate display and touch sensor, which complicates the manufacturing process. Plus the second layer that is the touch sensor absorbs light, degrading image quality.

big Samsung to show off a new phone with new, better AMOLED touchscreen at the MWC?
Instead of having to connect the separate display and touch panel, the new Super AMOLED displays by Samsung incorporate the touch sensor into themselves. The sensor is just 0.001 mm thick so it lets most of the light pass through – Samsung promises that these displays will be five times more vivid and offer 20% better performance under sunlight. And they might as wellbe.

The Super AMOLED units they plan to show off at the MWC next week are rumored to be 3.3-inch displays with WVGA (480×800 pixels) resolution. And machine translation from Korean has a long way to go before it’s understandable, but by all appearances, Samsung are not going to show off just a display, but a phone using that display.

Symbian goes fully open source, it's a free download to all

There have been quite a few rumors about the fate of Symbian, but now the OS has entered a new stage of its existence - its code is now open source. This move began in June 2008, when Nokia bought Symbian and created the Symbian Foundation to take over the development of the OS. And the Foundation has big plans for the future.

Symbian OS is still the most popular smartphone operating system with 330 million units shipped only last year. The Foundation claims this is the largest transition to open source ever and believes it will help speed up the evolution of the platform. And evolution it needs - with the likes of the iPhone and Google's Android OS, which is also open source, exploding into popularity.

The Symbian Foundation includes Nokia, LG, Motorola, NTT Docomo, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, operators Vodafone and AT&T and chipmaker Texas Instruments. Nokia has been the primary developer in Symbian, but plans to reduce their input to less than 50% by the second half of 2011.

This will leave room for a lot more contributors - now that the Symbian code is available for anyone. In fact the source code should be up for download from the Symbian Foundation website starting 14:00 GMT today. The platform includes the OS itself but also things developed by individual members of the Foundation, including the user interfaces.

The Foundation also hopes this move will lead to a faster development of third party apps now that developers are not hindered by so much proprietary aspects of Symbian. They also hope that the open source nature will improve the security of the OS.

So, in a way Symbian as we know it is going away - this is the end of the line for Symbian S60, which is the last man standing after Sony Ericsson gave up on UIQ. The source code that the Symbian Foundation is releasing seems to be Symbian^3, especially since Symbian^1 is actually S60 5th edition and Symbian^2 was dropped.

We are yet to see the impact this move will create on other open source initiatives like LiMo and if it will help Symbian recover some of the lost ground against iPhone and Android.
